In times of need a Levy could be summoned from all districts of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. It was composed mostly of nobles. Both they and the volunteers fought using arms and equipment they themselves could afford. Volunteers were irregular units that supported the regular army in some campaigns. Such formations usually lacked discipline and the will to fight, but on some occasions they even could be dangerous to regular troops.
