Description

“Carentan, 10 – 13th June 1944” shows fighting between American and German forces for key town in Normandy. I have selected this battle, because system “Great Battles of Small Units” gives opportunity to present in easy way dilemmas of both sides.

Scenarios:
In the box players find two scenarios. This is rather usual approach to this topic. First, American 101st Airborne Division must take control on Carentan (scenario “Purple Heart Lane”). Next, American paratroopers (supported by units from 2nd Armored Division) must hold the town against German counterattack provided by 17th SS Panzergrenadier Division.

I have also added optional rule to the first scenario. Thanks to that players can see, what would happen if 17th SS arrived earlier.

In “Purple Heart Lane” scenario the major problem for American player is how to involve overwhelming forces in difficult terrain and in limited time and how to combine movement with artillery support. Formation activation by card values provides excellent tool to reflect that issue. On the other hand German player can simply hold his positions or try to strengthen the defence by units in the vicinity of Carentan. This is difficult, because the player has only a few cards in his hand. Moreover, units on both sides have high morale value, so cards with high values must played to inflict losses.

Scenario “Battle of Bloody Gulch” is something like meeting engagement. If initiative goes for Germans at the beginning of gameplay, the progress is visible. But infantry must keep up with panzers. If Americans will be able to strengthen their defence, German advance will be slower. In both cases battle outcome is decided on Carentan streets.

Components.

The box contains one mapboard (420x594 mm), 216 die-cut counters, one scenario card, one player’s aid card with terrain table and special rules, series rule book and historical introduction. All random procedures are resolved by 52 standard cards which players must supply by themselves.
