Each game uses a random selection of companies and permits, creating varied openings and long-term strategic decisions. Companies can grow, merge, and collapse as newer trains make older ones obsolete, rewarding careful planning, sharp investment, and strong timing. The game supports both multiplayer 18xx play and solitaire play.
