Product Type: Standalone fantasy strategy board game.
Dragonbond: Lords of Vaala is an asymmetric fantasy strategy game set in the Dragonbond universe.
Players take on very different roles. As a dragon, you raid, destroy, and gather power through raw strength. As a general, you raise armies, manage forces, and fight for control through strategy and command. Each character has a unique deck of spells, giving players different tactical options and play styles.
The goal is to collect 10 Power tokens before your rivals. During the game, dragons and generals may also become Dragonbonded, creating a special team dynamic with shared power and new abilities.
Lords of Vaala combines fantasy warfare, area control, spell casting, action planning, dice combat, and striking miniatures. It is best suited to players who enjoy asymmetric roles and direct conflict in a dramatic fantasy setting.
Boardgamegeneral advice:
"Dragonbond: Lords of Vaala has some of the most striking artwork and creative fantasy creatures we have seen in a board game. The setting feels colourful, strange, and alive, and that uniqueness carries over into the gameplay.
This is not just a standard fantasy area-control game. Players are chasing their own paths to victory, but generals and dragons can eventually become Dragonbonded, creating alliances through design, opportunity, or necessity. That shifting relationship between rivals and partners gives the game a very different feel from many other conflict games.
The regional unit upgrade system is one of the strongest parts of the design. Controlling certain areas lets you unlock special creatures from those regions, so fighting over land is not only about territory or points; it is also about what your army can become. Turn planning is also interesting, because you prepare actions by stacking cards in the order you want them to resolve. It has a little of the programmed-action tension of Forbidden Stars, though handled in its own way.
There are several ways the game can turn. A player who is ahead may try to shorten the game by preparing fewer actions and passing sooner, giving opponents fewer chances to respond, but that choice has a cost and can backfire. The game can also end suddenly if a General or Dragon is cornered and killed, which creates another layer of threat and opportunity. At two players, both players control generals, while the AI dragons do a good job of staying present and forcing players to account for them.
Your first play may involve checking a rule clarification or two, but once the system clicks, Lords of Vaala becomes a fantasy area-control game unlike much else. Highly recommended for players who enjoy area control, dramatic fantasy settings, colourful characters, table politics, and games that create their own story as they unfold."
