Grand Prix

Grand Prix is a standalone auto racing board game from GMT Games, designed by Jeff and Carla Horger. It builds on the movement system used in Thunder Alley, but adapts it for Grand Prix-style racing with tighter circuits, more limited passing opportunities, and greater emphasis on pit strategy and tire management.

Players control racing teams and compete for position across four Grand Prix tracks. Scoring can focus on individual car placement or team performance, making the game as much about managing a full racing effort as simply getting one car across the line first. The movement system uses familiar solo, line, pursuit, and lead movement concepts, but the track layouts and race conditions force players to think carefully about timing, positioning, and risk.

The game includes three different event decks for hard tires, soft tires, and wet tires. Each changes the feel of the race: hard tires create a tighter and more controlled contest, soft tires allow greater speed, and wet tires make the race more hazardous with more spinouts and contact. Aggressive driving is represented through close-call tokens, which can build up until an event card makes the riskiest driver pay for it.

Grand Prix is a good fit for players who enjoy tactical racing games, team management, variable track conditions, and GMT’s Thunder Alley racing system. It is especially worth noting that the tracks are compatible with Thunder Alley, and Thunder Alley tracks can also be used with Grand Prix.
