The Dark Summer: Normandy 1944 is a WWII operational wargame covering the Normandy campaign from the D-Day landings through the closing of the Falaise Gap.
Part of Ted S. Raicer’s Dark operational series, the game uses a chit-pull activation system to create uncertainty, tension, and strong solo suitability. Weather plays a major role, shaping Allied air power, shipping, German reaction ability, and the tempo of operations.
The Allied player must secure the beaches, capture Cherbourg, break out toward Brittany and Paris, and prevent German forces from escaping. The German player must delay, counterattack, threaten the beachheads, and exploit every opportunity created by the unpredictable activation system.
Despite its moderate complexity, The Dark Summer covers many key features of the campaign, including D-Day landings, German strongpoints, Allied air and naval support, artillery superiority, reinforcement delays, and the fight to break out of the bocage.
This is a strong choice for players who enjoy operational WWII games with high replayability, manageable footprint, and a campaign that stays uncertain from the first landing to the final breakout.
