Ardennes ’44 is an operational-level WWII wargame covering the German offensive through the Ardennes in December 1944, better known as the Battle of the Bulge.
Designed by Mark Simonitch, the game places players in command of German and American forces over the critical ten days from December 16 to 26. You will manage unit movement, coordinate attacks, control key road networks, and react to changing conditions, all while trying to either push toward the Meuse or hold the line against the offensive.
The system emphasizes historical movement and constraints. German advances tend to follow realistic routes through difficult terrain, while the Allied player must delay, reinforce, and stabilize the front at key points such as Bastogne, St. Vith, and Elsenborn Ridge. Supply, weather, and congestion all play a role, with mechanics covering night operations, air supply, traffic jams, and engineering tasks like bridge demolition and repair.
The game includes both the full campaign and shorter scenarios focusing on the opening stages of the offensive, making it suitable for different session lengths. While detailed, the Simonitch system is known for its clarity and flow, making Ardennes ’44 accessible to players with some wargaming experience while still offering depth for more dedicated players.
This 4th Printing provides the most refined version of the game, combining a well-regarded system with a focused and historically grounded campaign.
Contents include: mapsheets, counters, rulebook/playbook, player aids, setup display, and dice.
