Bitter Woods: Designer Edition

Bitter Woods: Designer Edition is a regimental-level Battle of the Bulge wargame from Compass Games, covering Germany’s desperate winter offensive in the Ardennes in December 1944. Players command the forces struggling through the snow, forests, roads and towns of one of the largest and fiercest battles fought by the U.S. Army in World War II.

This Designer Edition presents the highly regarded Bitter Woods system with updated counter graphics, additional scenarios and an extended campaign game that allows the Allied counterattack to develop more fully. Smaller scenarios cover key moments such as Patton’s relief of Bastogne, while the full campaign gives both players the larger operational challenge of breakthrough, delay, exploitation and recovery.

The game includes rules for mechanized exploitation movement, hidden fuel dumps, leader units, reserves, random events, bridge demolition, Kampfgruppe Peiper, Skorzeny infiltration, air power and artillery support. The result is a playable but serious treatment of the Ardennes campaign, with the German player racing against time and logistics while the Allied player fights to slow, contain and eventually reverse the offensive.
