History of the Ancient Seas II: Dies Irae is a standalone ancient Mediterranean strategy game from Sound of Drums and the second volume in the History of the Ancient Seas series.
Boardgamegeneral Advice History of the Ancient Seas II: Dies Irae is an excellent choice for players who enjoy medium-heavy strategy games with strong player interaction and historical depth. Set in the ancient Eastern Mediterranean, it combines empire-building, military expansion, and economic planning in a beautifully produced package typical of Sound of Drums. Ideal for 2–3 players who enjoy thoughtful strategic play, asymmetric tension, and a richly thematic experience with excellent solo potential.Set in the eastern Mediterranean, Dies Irae places players in command of the Greek city states, the Persian Empire, or Egypt as they compete for dominance across islands, coasts, trade routes, and provinces. Each empire must balance military expansion with wealth, stability, culture, and the happiness of its people.
The game is built around highly interactive micro-impulses and an action-cycle system. Players choose from a limited set of actions, but an action chosen by one player cannot immediately be chosen by the next. This creates constant pressure: build fleets, raise armies, expand trade, develop your civilization, negotiate, strike, delay, or defend before your rivals take the opportunity away.
Although Dies Irae was originally designed around a tense three-player structure, current edition listings also mention solitaire and reduced-player options through the “Archimedes” solitaire bot and static empire rules. The core appeal remains the same: every empire must watch two fronts, avoid becoming the obvious target, and decide when war is worth the cost.
This is a strong choice for players who enjoy ancient-world strategy, asymmetric pressure, empire building, negotiation, and historical conflict with a broader civilization-game feel.
