Imperial Struggle is a two-player strategy game covering the global rivalry between Britain and France from 1697 to 1789—a century defined by war, diplomacy, trade, and empire-building.
Rather than focusing purely on military conflict, the game blends economic development, political influence, and strategic positioning. Players compete across multiple theaters, from Europe to India to the Americas, building their strength during peace turns and testing it during war.
The core system revolves around Investment Tiles and Event cards. In peace turns, players choose how to develop their position—expanding trade, securing alliances, or preparing for war—while also denying key opportunities to their opponent. In war turns, those preparations are put to the test, with control of territories and prestige on the line.
Unlike many traditional wargames, Imperial Struggle keeps complexity manageable while still offering meaningful strategic depth. There are no dice, and outcomes depend on planning, timing, and how well players manage competing priorities across the globe.
Often compared to Twilight Struggle, this design shifts the focus from card-driven play to a more open system, where both players have access to shared opportunities but must choose carefully how to use them.
This is an excellent choice for players looking for a strategic two-player game with historical depth, strong interaction, and a balance between accessibility and depth.
Contents include: mounted game board, investment tiles, British and French war tiles, control markers, war displays, event cards, player aids, and game markers.
