Virgin Queen: Wars of Religion 1559-1598 is a grand strategy game for 2 to 6 players covering the military, political, religious, and dynastic struggles of late 16th-century Europe.
As a sequel to Here I Stand, the game keeps much of the familiar card-driven structure while shifting the action to the age of Elizabeth I, Philip II, the Spanish Armada, religious wars in France, Dutch rebellion, Ottoman pressure, overseas raiding, and courtly intrigue. Spain may begin as the great imperial power, but every rival has ways to threaten its reach.
Players use cards for events or operations, managing armies, fleets, diplomacy, religious influence, espionage, patronage, exploration, and even royal marriages. The result is a rich multiplayer game where table negotiation, timing, and opportunism matter as much as military strength.
New systems for world exploration, dynastic weddings, patronage, and spying give Virgin Queen its own flavor. Sponsor Shakespeare or Galileo, send sea dogs against Spanish treasure, arrange useful marriages, or quietly undermine rivals through espionage and religious pressure.
This is a strong choice for groups who enjoy large historical multiplayer games with diplomacy, asymmetry, and a big dramatic sweep across Europe and the wider world.
Contents include: five countersheets, mounted mapboard, playing and royal cards, power cards, diplomatic and reference cards, rules booklet, scenario booklet, patronage charts, royal wedding card, and ten dice.
