From the Publisher:
Eastern Front, Summer 1944: Soviet forces launch a major offensive, codenamed BAGRATION, which destroys a large portion of the German army positioned in the central sector. The Soviets advance as far as the Vistula River, reaching the outskirts of Warsaw. General Model, by rallying some relatively intact forces and counterattacking from various directions, manages to halt the offensive, at least temporarily. All this occurs as Warsaw rises up, and, a little further south in Magnuszew, other Soviet forces succeed in crossing to the western side of the Vistula, creating a dangerous bridgehead...
The game consists of ten turns in total, Each turn represents one day of real time. Each hex represents a distance of about two kilometers from side to side. Units vary from brigades to battalions, most of them armored, mechanized or motorized. Complexity is rated 2 out of 5 and an average game duration is about 4-5 hour
Command the desperate clash outside Warsaw in Model's Counterattack, a gripping operational-level World War II wargame published by Sound of Drums. Tailored for 1 to 2 players with a playing time of 3 to 5 hours, this tactical powerhouse covers the explosive culmination of the Soviet Union's 1944 Operation Bagration. One player guides the rigid yet devastating momentum of Soviet Army Corps rushing towards the Vistula River, while the other steps into the shoes of Field Marshal Walter Model, orchestrating swift, flexible German armored counter-offensives to stave off collapse. Featuring intuitive hex-and-counter maneuvers, Event Cards, and multi-round activation mechanics that reflect true doctrine differences, Model's Counterattack simulates historical attrition and the outbreak of the Warsaw Uprising. Will you break the German lines, or stop the juggernaut?
Step onto the blood-soaked terrain of the Eastern Front during the critical summer of 1944 with Model's Counterattack, a high-stakes operational wargame published by Sound of Drums. The historical setting picks up in the wake of Operation Bagration, a massive Soviet offensive that completely shattered Germany's Army Group Centre. As Soviet tank armies plunge forward toward the Vistula River and the gates of Warsaw, General Walter Model is rushed to the front line to salvage the situation. He must assemble fragmented units, command newly arrived Panzer divisions, and launch immediate counter-strokes to stabilize the crumbling line.
Designed by Sergio Schiavi, Model's Counterattack handles 1 to 2 players across ten thrilling game turns, where each turn represents a single day of real-time combat. The map scales meticulously at two kilometers per hex, tracking armored, mechanized, and motorized units operating at the brigade and battalion level.
The defining engine of the game is its asymmetrical activation phase, elegantly portraying the doctrinal differences between the opposing armies:
Each turn features intensive activation rounds where commanders orchestrate regular movement, aggressive overrun attacks, conventional assaults, and reserve exploitation.
The operational gameplay is deeply enriched by the implementation of a custom Event Card deck. Cards representing historical wildcards—such as Panzerfaust distributions, battlefield tank recovery, and sudden air support—inject fog of war and tactical unpredictability into every engagement. Furthermore, special rules govern heavy artillery bombardments, Stuka air strikes, the specific arrival mechanics of General Model himself, and the tense political timeline of the Warsaw Uprising, adding layers of historical immersion.
With a playing time ranging from 3 to 5 hours, the game offers exceptional replayability. The highly dynamic setup—where the Soviet side begins in full flood while German reinforcements trickle onto the map—ensures no two defensive stands play out the same way. While primarily designed as a dual-commander faceoff, the open-information activation tracking and predictable AI-friendly hex movement make it highly accessible for dedicated solo play.
At Boardgamegeneral, we love wargames that manage to balance rich historical flavor with accessible rule sets, and Model's Counterattack hits that sweet spot perfectly. Published in a premium edition by Sound of Drums, this package brings Sergio Schiavi's breathtaking, era-authentic map art and pre-rounded counters straight to your tabletop.
If you are a fan of operational Eastern Front classics like Traces of Victory or Dissimula Edizioni's previous hit From Salerno to Rome, you will feel right at home with these mechanics. The game’s greatest strength is how it models asymmetry. Playing the Soviets feels like swinging a sledgehammer, whereas piloting the German forces requires the delicate finesse of a fencing master, keeping you on the edge of your seat for the full 3 to 5 hours.
The main drawback lies in the lopsided opening act: the German player begins with a very sparse presence on the board, meaning you must be comfortable playing on the backfoot and absorbing massive blows during the first few turns.
Verdict: We rate this game as ideal for intermediate wargamers and seasoned veterans alike. Thanks to its intuitive rules and manageable counter density, it also serves as an excellent stepping stone for board gamers looking to break into serious historical operational conflict simulation.
