Tarawa 1943 Solitaire

Lead the U.S. Marines in the brutal amphibious assault on Betio Atoll with Tarawa 1943 Solitaire from Worthington Games! Designed by Grant Wylie, this dedicated solitaire wargame captures the bloody 76-hour battle that defined Central Pacific amphibious warfare in World War II.

Designed strictly for 1 player with playing times of 30 to 60 minutes, Tarawa 1943 Solitaire puts you in command of US Marine landing waves. Face lethal coral reef obstacles, heavily fortified Japanese pillboxes, and entrenched crossfire in a fast-paced battle of momentum, fire support, and tactical grit.

"76 Hours of Hell" in the Central Pacific

In November 1943, the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps launched Operation Galvanic—the invasion of the Gilbert Islands. At Tarawa Atoll, the heavily fortified island of Betio presented an unprecedented challenge: low tides trapped landing craft on the outer reefs, forcing Marines to wade hundreds of yards through deep water into devastating machine gun and artillery fire.

Tarawa 1943 Solitaire puts you in command of the US Marine assault forces. Your objective is clear: establish beachheads across Red Beaches 1, 2, and 3, push inland to secure the strategic airfield, and eliminate heavily fortified Japanese positions before command attrition and casualties stall the invasion.

Key Gameplay Mechanics & Features

• Amphibious Landing Friction: Manage the initial landing waves (LVT Amtracs vs. traditional Higgins boats) while navigating reef depth variations, stranded armor, and heavily defended shorelines.
• Pillbox & Bunkerkill Mechanics: Utilize naval gunfire support, close-quarters flamethrowers, and demolition teams to systematically reduce Japanese strongpoints and blockhouses.
• Automated Japanese AI Threat: The automated AI bot directs Japanese counter-attacks, sniper fire, and interlocking defensive arcs based on historic defense doctrines.
• Accessible Setup & High Replayability: Simple, streamlined rules allow for immediate setup and low friction play—making it ideal for quick tactical solo gaming sessions.
