Archie’s War: The Battle for Guadalcanal is a Worthington Publishing wargame on the 1942 struggle between the U.S. Marines and Japanese forces on Guadalcanal. In the solitaire game, you take the role of Alexander “Archie” Vandegrift, commander of the 1st Marine Division, trying to hold the perimeter around Henderson Field as Japanese forces build up around you.
The game includes a double-sided board: one side for solitaire play and one side for the two-player game. The two-player version is a tense contest of maneuver, deception, and surprise, while the solo game focuses on the Marines’ desperate effort to survive repeated Japanese attacks. Worthington lists the game for 1–2 players with a playing time of 30–60 minutes.
This is a strong choice for players who want a compact Pacific War game with both solo and face-to-face options. Blocks provide hidden information and battlefield uncertainty, while the Guadalcanal setting gives every decision weight: hold the airfield, manage scarce strength, and survive long enough for relief.
