Kiev ’41: Kickstarter Edition is a VentoNuovo block wargame on Army Group South’s campaign in Ukraine during Operation Barbarossa.

Following Moscow ’41 and Leningrad ’41, this game covers the southern front of the 1941 invasion. The German player must drive toward Ukraine, the Donbass, Crimea, and the Caucasus while managing command limits, exhausted formations, and the need to force a decisive result. The Soviet player must defend a vast front, hold key positions, counterattack when possible, and make the German advance as costly as possible.

Kiev ’41 uses colorful wooden blocks to create fog of war, while headquarters units and an impulse system model the command-and-control limits of the campaign. Variable setup and reinforcements help keep play from becoming scripted, and the game is designed for two players with strong solitaire suitability.

This Kickstarter Edition is a good fit for players who enjoy VentoNuovo’s block-game approach and want to complete the 1941 Barbarossa trilogy with the southern campaign.
