Modern Tactics #1: Afghanistan is a modern tactical wargame from VUCA Simulations covering platoon-level firefights in Afghanistan from 2006 to 2009. Coalition forces, including Canadian, U.S., ANA, and SOF units, face an insurgent opponent using hidden contacts, IEDs, snipers, bombers, recruits, and fanatics across villages, compounds, vineyards, wadis, and rough ground.

The game uses alternating impulse play, forcing players to make sharp decisions about movement, fire, breaching, rallying, support, and tempo. Civilians, rules of engagement, collateral risk, line of sight, walls, compounds, artillery windows, and air support all shape the battlefield, making this a modern asymmetric conflict game rather than a simple firepower contest.

This is the first game in the Modern Tactics series and includes 20 scenarios ranging from raids and relief missions to set-piece assaults. It is suited to players interested in tactical-level modern warfare, asymmetric combat, and scenario-rich play.
