From the Publisher:
Road to the Rhine is a two-player Operational level board-wargame simulation of the post-Normandy campaigns from September 1st, 1944 to April 1945 on the Western Front. The game covers the initial attempts by the Allies to maintain the pace of their advance in the face of a rapidly deteriorating logistical situation, the German recovery culminating in the Battle of the Bulge, and the final Allied drive across the Rhine.
There are 5 scenarios including the full campaign game.
Scale is "grand operational" with division and brigade/regiment-size ground units and air wings. Hexes are 7 miles across, turns are weekly. Medium complexity, low stacking, and some book-keeping.
Combat mechanics are quite standard and typical for a wargame of this era, but the sequence of play is very flexible and arguably far ahead of its time - multiple impulses within each player turn triggered by supply expenditure, and interspersed with reserve movement and combat phases. There are also rules for airborne assaults, commandos, air support, specialized armor and many more.
Combat is odds-based with shifts and strength modifiers but no DRMs. Logistics are very important in play, with port capacity driving how many units you can operate at full capacity.
Drive the Axis forces back to the German border with Road to the Rhine from Compass Games! Designed by acclaimed wargame designer Vance von Borries, this operational World War II wargame simulates the Allied drive across Western Europe following the breakout from Normandy, covering September 1944 through the push to the Rhine in early 1945.
Designed for 1 to 2 players with scenario and campaign options ranging from 3 to 8 hours, Road to the Rhine challenges players to manage broad-front offensives, logistical supply limits, harsh winter weather, and ferocious German counter-attacks across the Western Front.
Following the liberation of Paris and the breakout from Normandy, Allied Supreme Commander Dwight D. Eisenhower faced a monumental strategic choice: pursue Montgomery's narrow thrust in the north (Operation Market Garden) or maintain a broad-front campaign stretching from Holland to the Swiss border. Road to the Rhine puts players directly in control of this high-stakes campaign during the autumn and winter of 1944–1945.
As the Allied player, you must balance racing against the clock to breach the Westwall (Siegfried Line) before fuel shortages and harsh winter weather halt your advance. As the German player, you must execute a skillful fighting withdrawal, capitalize on Allied supply bottlenecks, and unleash devastating armored counter-offensives—such as the Battle of the Bulge.
At Boardgamegeneral, Vance von Borries' design work for Compass Games is held in high esteem for its historical accuracy and elegant operational flow. Road to the Rhine delivers an exceptional simulation of one of WWII's most widely studied strategic dilemmas.
What makes this title stand out is how masterfully it models the friction of war. Success isn't just about rolling high on combat tables—it's about managing fuel logistics, engineering river crossings under fire, and knowing when to pause an offensive before winter weather immobilizes your forces.
For historical wargamers, fans of WWII Western Front history, and solo wargamers seeking a rich operational campaign without overwhelming administrative bloat, Road to the Rhine is a must-have addition.
Verdict: A deeply engaging operational wargame that balances fluid maneuver, supply management, and rich historical detail across the Western Front.
