Sovereign of Discord: Fire in the Lake Expansion

Sovereign of Discord: Fire in the Lake Expansion is a prequel expansion for Fire in the Lake, taking GMT’s COIN Series back to the early years of the Vietnam War.

The expansion covers 1961-1963, before the large-scale conventional intervention of the United States and North Vietnam. Instead, the focus is on the Diem regime, the growing Viet Cong insurgency, early US and North Vietnamese involvement, Strategic Hamlets, advisors, coup plotting, and the fragile political situation in South Vietnam.

New scenarios allow players to begin in 1961 or 1963 and continue into the base Fire in the Lake campaign. With both this expansion and Fall of Saigon, players can explore the wider arc of the conflict from the early insurgency through to 1975.

The expansion adds new mechanics for the Diem period, including Strategic Hamlet pieces, Hanoi and Washington tracks, advisor units, regime stability, and a two-player scenario focused on the ARVN-Viet Cong struggle. It also includes new events and bonus content for the base game, adding more variety to later Fire in the Lake play.

This is a strong addition for players who want a deeper look at how the Vietnam War escalated, with more political instability, factional pressure, and early-war uncertainty.
