VCS Salerno: The 1943 Allied Invasion of Italy is a standalone operational wargame from Multi-Man Publishing covering the Allied invasion of southern Italy in 1943.
Product Type: Standalone WWII operational wargame. First game in the Variable Combat Series.
The game covers Operation Avalanche at Salerno, Operation Slapstick at Taranto, and Operation Baytown in Calabria, linking the different invasion areas through transit tracks that represent key stretches of terrain and supply routes. Both sides must manage the operational problem of holding, contesting, and exploiting these connections.
Allied naval power is represented through individual ship counters that can provide ranged support, while German guided missiles introduce a dangerous threat to Allied sea power. In addition to the 18-turn historical campaign, the game includes three alternate-history scenarios: Gavin’s Gambit, Long Shot for Barletta, and Race for Cassino.
The map uses three linked sections: the Salerno and east-coast sections use a scale of 1 mile per hex, while the Calabria / Taranto section uses 3 miles per hexside.
Contents include: two mapsheets, 1.5 sheets of 1/2 inch counters, VCS Standard rules, Salerno Exclusive rules, and charts/tables booklet.
