American Tank Ace: 1944-45

American Tank Ace: 1944-45 is a solitaire tactical WWII game from Compass Games that puts you in command of a U.S. tank crew in the European Theater of Operations. Starting after the Normandy landings, your Sherman crew must survive missions against German tanks, anti-tank guns, infantry, artillery, weather and the constant danger of being outgunned.

Each career follows your tank commander through missions such as attacks, defenses, movement to contact and assaults against prepared positions. Enemy forces are randomly generated, so no two campaigns unfold the same way. Surviving missions earns experience, awards, promotions and prestige, which can eventually give you access to improved tanks such as later Sherman variants, the Jumbo, the Easy Eight or even the M26 Pershing.

The game focuses on the tactical decisions a tank commander must make: when to button up, how to manage hull and turret facing, whether to seek hull-down protection, how to use smoke, and how to keep your crew and vehicle functioning under fire. Missions play quickly, making American Tank Ace well suited to solo players who want a campaign game that can be played in shorter sessions while still building a larger wartime narrative.

Although designed primarily for solitaire play, additional rules allow cooperative or competitive multiplayer options. This is a strong choice for players interested in WWII armor, campaign-style solo wargames and detailed but playable tactical combat.
