By Swords and Bayonets is a regimental-level American Civil War wargame and an entry in GMT’s Great Battles of the American Civil War series. It focuses on smaller battles, making it a more approachable way into the detailed GBACW system while still preserving the command, combat, formation, and battlefield nuance of the series.

The game includes four small-scale Civil War battles, each on its own half-size map: Big Bethel, Mill Springs, New Bern, and Rappahannock Station. With forces limited to division-sized actions, the game gives players a more manageable entry point into GBACW without reducing the historical character of the battles.

Contents include: two backprinted 22" x 17" full-colour maps, 560–700 half-inch counters, four backprinted order of battle/organization cards, four terrain effects charts backprinted with 2nd Disorder cards, two foldout player aid cards, two ten-sided dice, GBACW Series Rulebook, Battle Book, and counter tray.
