Captain’s Sea: The American Frigates 1799–1815

Captain’s Sea: The American Frigates 1799–1815 is a two-player naval wargame of single-ship actions during the Age of Sail. Instead of commanding a fleet, each player takes the role of a frigate captain trying to outmanoeuvre, outfight, and outlast the enemy.

The game features the original American frigates, including Chesapeake, Congress, Constellation, Constitution, President, and United States, along with British and French opponents from the turn of the nineteenth century. Classic engagements such as Constitution vs. Guerriere, Constellation vs. L’Insurgente, and Chesapeake vs. Shannon are included, with room for hypothetical matchups as well.

Gameplay focuses on the weather gauge, positioning, crew management, and the brutal consequences of close-range naval combat. Players must plan movement, bring guns to bear, allocate crew to firing, rigging, repairs, or other urgent tasks, and deal with the damage and uncertainty introduced by action cards.

With low-to-moderate complexity and a strong focus on ship-to-ship decision-making, Captain’s Sea is well suited to players who enjoy Age of Sail combat but prefer intimate tactical duels over large fleet actions.

Contents include: one 22" x 34" map, 24 one-inch maneuver selection blocks, 176 markers, three one-inch octagonal ship counters, a 16-page rulebook, a 24-page play/scenario book, a 55-card deck, two player aids, eight double-sided ship charts, and ten scenarios.
