Crisis: 1914

Crisis: 1914 is a game of international diplomacy, brinkmanship, and political pressure set during the July Crisis that led to the First World War. Players represent the major powers of Europe — Germany, Austria-Hungary, Russia, France, and Great Britain — as they try to gain prestige, manage domestic pressure, and avoid becoming the nation blamed for unleashing war.

The heart of the game is the balance between Prestige, Diplomatic Pressure, and Tension. Prestige is how you win, Diplomatic Pressure is how you gain it, and Tension is how you lose. Push too softly and your rivals outmaneuver you. Push too hard and you may provoke mobilization and trigger the war everyone claims to be trying to prevent.

Cards drive the crisis. Assertion cards increase your diplomatic standing, back-channel diplomacy lets you apply pressure without raising tension, caution cards help draw more options, and national interest or consensus cards help shape your government’s response. Hawks and doves inside your own cabinet complicate every decision, forcing you to form a coherent policy from conflicting advice.

Designed for 1 to 5 players and playable in under 2 hours, Crisis: 1914 includes a solitaire engine as well as multiplayer diplomatic play. It is a strong choice for players who enjoy political tension, card-driven decision-making, and historical “what if?” situations where war is possible but not inevitable.
