No Turning Back is the next game in The Gamers' Line of Battle (LoB) series covering the first epic confrontation between Grant and Lee, the Battle of the Wilderness in May 1864. The battle is a very misunderstood battle with the general narrative that both armies were stumbling to find each other in the thick woods. Units get lost and confusion reigns. While the precepts of this confused melee are generally true, there is much more to this battle that No Turning Back will showcase based on extensive design and research. There was maneuver at the operational level as both commanders prodded their forces forward to hit an open flank. Grant was seeking a general offensive to bring to bear the entire weight of his large army. Lee was not looking for a general engagement in the Wilderness, but had no choice when the shooting started and deftly engaged his outnumbered army. What is not often known is that both sides had multiple chances of obtaining victory only to be undone by the tide of fortune at the last minute. Do you have the dogged determination as Grant or Lee to snatch victory in the bloody thickets?
Game specific rules to handle the terrain that dictated how the forces fought include: WIlderness terrain type, command & communication difficulties, different trail types, and guides. Unique command situations are likewise represented in the game with Grant's chain of command with Meade's Army of the Potomac and Burnside's independent corps, Hancock's pseudo-wing command, Lt. Col. Sorrel's ad hoc division, Ewell's stoutness then passiveness on successive days, and A.P. Hill's inability to get his men dug in which nearly spelt disaster for him. While cavalry action was minimal, the actions of two cavalry regiments, the 1st NC and 5th NY, proved pivotal and their exploits are captured in the rules.
The map is accurately rendered from a survey conducted immediately following the war that laid out the myriad of trails that led the armies astray. The Order of Battle is presented with accurate regimental strengths with contributions from a leading Civil War scholar. No Turning Back will show the Wilderness in incredible detail at the regimental scale.

Plunge into the dense, suffocating thickets of the American Civil War with No Turning Back: The Battle of the Wilderness from Multi-Man Publishing. Expertly designed for 1 to 2 players with a deep operational footprint spanning 120 to 480 minutes, this premier entry in the Line of Battle (LoB) series chronicles the brutal May 1864 opening clash of Ulysses S. Grant’s Overland Campaign.
Command the relentless Army of the Potomac as they attempt to push through the tangled Virginia brush, or orchestrate Robert E. Lee’s brilliant, desperate flank attacks to halt the Union juggernaut. Utilizing a highly sophisticated brigade-level command structure, unique fog-of-war order delays, and granular line-of-sight terrain rules, this masterwork delivers uncompromising historical realism and intense tactical drama directly to your tabletop.
No Turning Back: The Battle of the Wilderness captures one of the most terrifying and chaotic engagements of the American Civil War. In May 1864, General Ulysses S. Grant launched a direct offensive into a dense, second-growth forest in Virginia known simply as "The Wilderness." Knowing his army was outnumbered, Confederate General Robert E. Lee aggressively attacked the Union columns inside this tangled terrain to completely neutralize their massive advantages in numbers and heavy artillery.
At the regiment and brigade level, the Line of Battle scale brings this claustrophobic environment to life. Individual hexes represent approximately 110 yards of tangled briars, ravines, and narrow dirt roads. The cardboard counters represent historical regiments and artillery batteries, forcing players to confront the same terrifying command breakdowns that plagued both staffs as brushfires broke out and smoke blinded entire division lines.
As the newest evolution of Dean Essig’s acclaimed tactical Civil War system, No Turning Back relies on a highly refined ruleset that prioritizes command intent, formation cohesion, and the friction of communication over simple piece-moving.
Major mechanics fueling this historical simulation include:
True to Multi-Man Publishing’s commitment to historical hobbyists, the component quality is excellent. The game features two large, beautifully rendered full-color maps that accurately track the roads, clearings, and thick undergrowths of the Virginia battlefield.
The box packs hundreds of sharply printed counters that clearly denote unit sizes, weapon types, and leader ratings. Because the system features a semi-hidden order acceptance loop rather than secret hands of cards, it functions as an exceptional, deeply rewarding solitaire wargame for players who enjoy managing complex historical situations from both operational perspectives.
At Boardgamegeneral, we hold the Line of Battle series in very high regard, and No Turning Back is an absolute triumph for Civil War enthusiasts. This game is designed for experienced wargamers who want to move past light abstract systems and experience the real, agonizing friction of 19th-century battlefield command.
The absolute strength of Dean Essig's design is how perfectly the mechanics mirror the real history. You will feel the genuine frustration of Grant or Lee as you watch a perfect opportunity slip away because a courier got lost or a division commander refused to advance through the thick brush. The fighting around Saunders' Field and the Orange Plank Road is incredibly tense, offering a rich tactical puzzle that changes with every playthrough.
The primary drawback is that if your gaming group prefers fast-paced, high-speed action with minimal tracking, this system will feel slow. But if you want a deeply atmospheric, highly accurate simulation of Civil War command chaos, this is a masterwork.
Verdict: The definitive simulation of the Battle of the Wilderness. Its stellar command mechanics and atmospheric terrain rules make it an essential centerpiece addition for any serious historical gamer's library.
