Prelude to Rebellion: Mobilization & Unrest in Lower Canada is a two-player card-driven strategy game about the political struggle that led to the Lower Canada Rebellion of 1837–1838.
Players take the roles of the Patriotes and the Loyalists, competing to mobilize support across Montréal, Québec, and the rural counties of Lower Canada. Cards can be used for activity points or historical events, while players build influence, form organizations, manage opportunity points, and try to control the timing of scoring.
This is not a battlefield wargame—the game ends when open fighting begins. Instead, it focuses on the tense years before rebellion, when public meetings, political pressure, external influence, radicalization, and popular mobilization pushed the colony toward crisis.
With low complexity, strong historical flavor, and a distinctive subject, Prelude to Rebellion is a good fit for players interested in political conflict, card-driven systems, and history that asks what might have happened before the first shots were fired.
Contents include: one mounted 22” x 34” game board, two double-sided player aids, six faction dice, four custom scoring dice, 275 mobilization cubes, 147 cards, two player boards, and 91 1/2” counters.
