The Late Unpleasantness is a two-game American Civil War package covering major Union campaigns against Richmond.
The box includes Gates of Richmond, covering the Seven Days Battles of 1862, and If It Takes All Summer, covering Grant’s Overland Campaign of 1864. Both games use point-to-point movement to reflect road networks, river crossings, supply lines, and the difficulty of coordinating large armies on campaign.
Units are divisions, with hidden stacks, leaders, dummy counters, supply pressure, and event cards adding uncertainty and historical flavor. Combat is built into movement, making timing and coordination central to success.
The system is designed to be learned quickly and played in an evening, while still offering enough chrome—Magruder’s theatrics, the Wilderness, leader events, and shifting supply bases—to keep each campaign tense and replayable.
Contents include: two 22” x 34” maps, three countersheets, two 55-card decks, two rulebooks with examples of play, player aid cards, three six-sided dice, and a box with lid.
